Nostalgic Video:
The Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"

This weekend talk of The Smashing Pumpkins' lackluster EP American Gothic inspired a SP good-ole-days binge. The event has been documented on my newly created graffiti wall with the epitaph, "1/11/08. We hath listened to The Smashing Pumpkins, and we hath enjoyed them. Why oh why dost thou sucketh now?" To further commemorate what is all too clearly another nail in the Pumpkins' coffin, I am posting the eye-popping video for Mellon Collie single "Tonight, Tonight." I can remember watching this video and thinking, WOW. What a beautiful song. What a beautiful video.

After the jump I've posted Georges Melies' silent film A Trip to the Moon, which is widely considered to be the first science fiction film, and was the inspiration for the Pumpkins' video. Warning: the crew takes a good three minutes to build/launch the spaceship, but after that, it gets a heck of a lot more interesting. That moon at the 4:14-mark is absolutely stunning. Can someone make me a T-shirt with that image on it?

This is the closest I could find. hehe

I'm still kind of on the Pumpkins binge. It's been so long since I actively listened to them.

For some reason this post makes me want to ask:

Have you seen the preview for Be Kind Rewind?!?! =D

Moon... I was CONVINCED that the store in that preview was the same one in High Fidelity. (Just look at that opening shot.) But they filmed Be Kind Rewind in NY...

I really love Michel Gondry, but Jack Black is, well, a bit spotty. I am excited to see what the two can do together.

The "Tonight, Tonight" video was the first exposure I had to The Smashing Pumpkins. I, like many, was a MTV baby and I absolutely loved this video. Billy Corgan gave me the creeps and haunted a few of my dreams but overall I enjoyed them. I never can figure out why I didn't buy a single one of their albums...

I still remember the year that my Halloween pumpkin (so dutifully carved to perfection) got smashed by some no good pot smokin' high schoolers. After the shock had worn off one of my first thoughts was, "I wonder if they like The Smashing Pumpkins..."
