What Are You Listening to Right Now?

I love talking to people about the music they love. What vindication, to meet others who share your same taste. Even more rewarding can be those times when someone introduces you to something new. Today I want to try a little experiment. I'll tell you about some of my latest obsessions; in return I'd love to hear what you're groovin' on -- new, old, rock, rap, slowcore, showtunes -- whatever's clever is totally whatever.

"I'll show you mine, you show me yours..."

(From Left to Right)

Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
This album will be officially released tomorrow, as will my review of the album. Without giving too much away, I will say that Hot Chip has yet to disappoint. If you want something to groove and/or dance to, this one pops.

Beach House - Devotion
This is another upcoming release, and one I've been obsessing over for weeks. Call me crazy, but I'm confident this will be one of my top albums of the year. Remember that Mazzy Star song "Fade Into You"? I've heard B.H. compared to this 90s band, which is true in terms of the overall aesthetic, though B.H. takes the sound so much further. Get this album. Now.

Atlas Sound - Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel
I'm obsessed with all things Deerhunter, so logically that would include frontman Bradford Cox's upcoming side project. In many ways Atlas Sound evokes a Deerhunter-esque feel, though decidedly less dark. Driving the thirty minutes to work I wasn't too sure about this album. A few hours later, driving back home, everything started to click. I'm not sure where I'll eventually position this album, though I'm enjoying what I've heard so far.

Califone - Quicksand/Cradlesnakes
How does experimental-acoustic-folk sound? If you're curious, get this album or 2006's Roots and Crowns. If you have the patience and an attentive ear, you won't be disappointed.

Love is All - Nine Times That Same Song
Love is All is perhaps the diametric opposite of Califone. Califone=breezy and laid back. Love is All = coked-out rock hysterics. I've rediscovered this album after enduring repeat listens of the recently released Love is All Mixed Up (as you might guess, a remix album). By the time it was all said and done, I missed the Love is All album terribly, and longed to hear it emerge unscathed. Stay tuned for more whining about the remix album, once I muster the energy to write that review. Maybe if I turned the radio off I'd find the time?

Thanks for listening to my recent obsessions. Now it's your turn.

Nada Surf - Lucky
The single "Whose Authority" alone will probably secure a place in my Top 10 for the year.

Bob Mould - District Line
Ditto for Mould's single "The Silence Between Us."

February 5th is a damn fine day in my book.

Evangelicals - The Evening Descends
Still holding up rather well. Nothing revolutionary, but a lot of fun to listen to.

The Ruby Suns - Sea Lion
Could be called Sung Tongs pt. 2, and I mean that in the best possible way.

El Guincho - Alegranza
Speaking of Animal Collective, some have called this album the Spanish Person Pitch. That's a pretty fair comparison, and again, meant in the best possible way.

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
Last week's concert rekindled my love for their debut album.

Sweet jesus... you that group of people you were talking about in the other post... the ones that tend to download/purchase ten albums even giving the last one a really good listen... yeah, that would be me right now.

I've downloaded (a good percent actually legally purchased) like 12 albums in the last 2 days! I honestly already don't remember everything I got! *sigh*

...this is at least what I listened to yesterday?

The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic

The New Pornographers - Electric Version

Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds

Thanksgiving - Thanksgiving

...and the ever FUCKING AMAZING!!!

MIRAH - Advisory Committee (This album is a staple for me along with The Microphones - The Glow Pt2. I honestly love both albums enough to kill any one whom might dare to speak out against them!!! *gives the crazy eyes* )

I haven't found anything worthwhile to listen to lately. I know that's sad. :( I just can't find anything that blows me away...or perhaps I'm not trying hard enough.
I acutally put in Sleater-Kinney - The Hot Rock on the way to work today...other than that...lately I've listened to New Hot Chip, Burial - Untrue, NIN - Pretty Hate Machine, (random, I know), Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies (for those days when I need a wake up on my way into work and I'm not driving in carpool). Haha.

I've just joined the iPod nation, so it's been nice to be able to listen to anything I haven't burned yet at work.

Today I listened to some

Elliot Smith, XO
Evangelicals, The Evening Descends
St. Vincent, Marry Me
Cyann & Ben, Sweet Beliefs
Beach House, Devotion

Yah!

Elizabeth & the Catapult - Self Titled EP
When the track “Momma’s Boy” slips from folk to Jon Brion pop to vaudeville and back, I can’t help but crack a smile.

Ladyhawke - Paris Is Burning (track)
Can't wait for this album to drop later in the year, as I'm already addicted.

The Wind-Up Bird - Self-Titled
If you haven't drifted off to sleep whilst listening to this gem, you've missed out.

Lovage - Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By
Mike Patton + Jennifer Charles = Sexiest album of all time ever. An oldie but a goodie.

The Kinks - The Kinks are The Village Green Preservation Society
