Don't Tell Anyone You Don't Own...

Blonde Redhead - La Mia Vita Violenta

(Smells Like Records, 1995)

"Violent Life" - mp3

Whenever I get burnt out on a band's most recent release, I turn to the back catalogue. So after taking 23 on perhaps a few too many spins this summer and fall ("Spring and by Summer Fall"?) I've been listening to a lot of older BR -- and loving the shit out of it.

La Mia Vita Violenta (Italian for "My Violent Life") was the band's second release on Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley's label, as well as the band's first album with their current lineup. Undoubtedly Shelley's association with the record was a major source of those early-Sonic-Youth comparisons. To an extent the analogy is fair -- but is sounding like a watered-down Sonic Youth (and occasionally, the Velvet Underground) necessarily a bad thing?

Fans turned off by 23's crisp production and brazen guitar work will embrace Violenta's raw art rock. Just listen to opener "(I Am Taking Out My Eurotrash) I Still Get Rocks Off" and witness roving guitars, meandering vocals, Kazu screeching like nails on a chalkboard -- a decidedly Dirty-Blonde Redhead.

I highly recommend people check out the videos for "Equus" and "Top Ranking" on the right side of the page.

Are you kidding me?!?!?! I was going to do one on Damaged Lemons! Oh well. La Mia Vita Violenta is pretty fucking great. I really like "U.F.O.", and "Bean" sounds like what Interpol was listening to when they wrote "Song Seven".
