The Grammys' Latest Sad Attempt to Acknowledge Indie Artists

Today the powers that be announced their nominees for the 2008 Grammys.

After ALL those commercials, it's no surprise that the sultry Miss Feist garnered four nominations (Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Short Form Music Video). I've got nothing but love for Feist, and she deserves the nod from mainstream America. Far more surprising is the inclusion of Wilco's Sky Blue Sky as Best Rock Album. Really? Call me crazy, but nominating The Reminder for Best Rock Album makes more sense.

Other notable nominations for 2007:

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver (Best Electronic/Dance Album)
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away (Best Alternative Album)
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (Best Alternative Album)

Consider the following recent indie nods... Even though most are losers, (some of them) will forever be winners as far as I'm concerned:

2006 - Fiona Apple - Extrordinary Machines (Best Pop Vocal Album)
The White Stripes - "My Doorbell" (Best Pop Group or Duo with Vocal)

2005 - Wilco - A Ghost is Born (Best Alternative Album) - THEY ACTUALLY WON! Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News (Best Alternative Album)

2004 - Radiohead - "There There" (Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo With Vocal)
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief (Best Alternative Album)
Sigur Ros - ( ) (Best Alternative Album)
The Flaming Lips - Fight Test (Best Alternative Album - WTF???)

2003 - The Flaming Lips - "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" (Best Rock Instrumental Performance)
Beck - Sea Change (Best Alternative Album)

2002 - Bjork - Verspertine (Best Alternative Album)
Radiohead - Amnesiac (Best Alternative Album) -- WHOA GRAMMYS, YOU NAILED THIS ONE! ALAS, RADIOHEAD LOST TO COLDPLAY: THE ULTIMATE INSULT.

P.S. It's interesting that the Grammys still use the term "alternative" in the original sense of the word, even though nowadays it also describes anyone who sounds like Nickleback, Fallout Boy, and whatever else rapes public radio these days.

That Fight Test thing is the EP that was released, I'm assuming, and not the song. Still, WTF? I'm guessing the people at the Grammy's felt that a throwaway EP from the Flaming Lips was better than Echoes or (surprisingly) Transatlanticism and Give Up.

Also, Wilco's nomination is just as unsurprising as Feist's when you consider the VW ads Wilco had. Its almost as if the only knowledge of "Alternative" Rock anyone affiliated with the Grammy's has comes from commercials. Makes me wonder what might have happened had the T-Mobile ad over the summer instead of late fall. Maybe Hissing Fauna would have received some Grammy love.

The second to last sentence in the second paragraph is supposed to read: "Makes me wonder what might have happened had the of Montreal T-Mobile ad appeared over the summer instead of late fall." I should probably start proofreading my comments.

People still use the phrase "alternative" without the word "lifestyle" afterward?

Alternative to what? Mainstream sub-par schlock? Please. Neon Bible deserves to be in the mix for album of the year.

And if LCD doesn't win, it's a crime and goes to show how out-of-touch the Grammys are.
